The 7 Myths Around Resilency and Burnout with Dr. Liz Moyer
Apr 29, 2026
There’s a version of resilience that gets praised in our culture, especially in the military. It looks like pushing through, holding it all together, and being the one everyone can count on no matter what.
On the outside, it looks strong. On the inside, it often feels like exhaustion.
Many high-achieving women are carrying an invisible load at work, at home, and in their relationships. They are capable, dependable, and constantly giving. Over time, that level of output becomes expected. It becomes identity. And somewhere along the way, caring for themselves starts to feel optional.
The Misunderstanding of Resilience
Resilience has been reduced to endurance. The ability to keep going, no matter how depleted you feel.
Resilience is built in the moments when you recognize that something is not working and choose to do something different. It is developed through self-awareness, through asking for support, and through being willing to sit with discomfort long enough to understand what is underneath it.
Growth does not come from avoiding struggle. It comes from moving through it with intention.
Why Burnout Keeps Happening
One of the biggest gaps is the absence of recovery.
There is a constant focus on performance, productivity, and pushing forward. Recovery is treated as something you earn later, often after you have already reached a breaking point.
The body does not operate that way.
Without regular opportunities to downshift, the nervous system stays in a heightened state of stress. Over time, that stress becomes the baseline. Sleep suffers, patience shortens, and everything starts to feel harder than it should.
Burnout is not a sudden failure. It is the result of sustained imbalance.
Shifting the Approach
Change does not require a complete overhaul. It begins with small, consistent shifts.
Paying attention to your patterns. Noticing the moments when your body is asking for something different. Creating space for practices that actually restore you instead of temporarily distracting you.
There is also a deeper layer to this work. Many of the patterns that drive overworking and people-pleasing were learned for a reason. At some point, they helped you feel safe, valued, or in control. Approaching those patterns with curiosity instead of judgment allows you to understand them, rather than fight against them.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Isolation amplifies burnout. Connection disrupts it.
Being surrounded by people who are willing to listen, to support, and to remind you that you are not the only one navigating this creates space for real change. There is strength in being seen and supported, especially in environments where that has not always been the norm.
You are allowed to care for yourself in the same way you care for everyone else.
That is not weakness. That is sustainable strength.
