What Mortality Can Teach Us About Living Fully Christina Stiverson
Aug 26, 2026
Thinking about death is uncomfortable. Most of us would rather assume there will always be more time. More time to have the conversation, take the trip, make the change, be more present with our families, or finally pursue the things that matter to us.
But what if acknowledging that our time is limited could actually help us live more fully?
In this episode of Leading With Heart, I sit down with transformational wellness educator, certified grief coach, retired U.S. Air Force officer, and bestselling author Christina Stiverson to talk about mortality, meaning, identity, and the legacy we are creating while we are still here.
Who Are You Beyond Your Roles?
Military culture teaches us how to serve a mission bigger than ourselves. We learn to accomplish the mission, meet expectations, pursue the next promotion, and keep moving forward. Those skills can serve us incredibly well, but they can also make it easy to build our entire identity around what we do.
If your rank, career, accomplishments, and roles were stripped away tomorrow, who would you be?
That question can be difficult to answer, especially when you have spent years defining yourself through service, leadership, motherhood, achievement, or responsibility. Yet understanding who you are underneath those roles matters long before retirement or another major life transition forces you to figure it out.
You Are Already Creating Your Legacy
We often talk about legacy as something we leave behind after we're gone, but Christina offers a different perspective. Your legacy is being created right now.
It is in the way you make people feel, the relationships you prioritize, the conversations you choose to have, and the way you spend your time. It is the version of you your children, friends, coworkers, and Airmen experience today.
That realization invites us to look at our lives with more honesty. Are the things receiving most of your time and energy aligned with what you say matters most to you?
Let Mortality Bring Clarity to Your Life
You don't need to experience a devastating loss, receive a diagnosis, or reach retirement before you decide what matters. You can choose to create that perspective now.
During our conversation, Christina shares five mirrors she uses to help people examine their lives: meaning, awareness, relationships, preparation, and legacy. These aren't designed to give you someone else's answers. They help you ask better questions so you can discover your own.
Stop Waiting for Someday
There will always be another goal, responsibility, assignment, or reason to postpone the life you want to live. The invitation in this episode is to stop assuming that what matters most belongs in some distant future.
Your days matter now. Your relationships matter now. Your presence matters now.
You don't have to wait for life to force perspective on you. You can choose to live with intention today.
